Duterte stuck between rock and shoal

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines has reacted to China's aggressive expansion in the South China Sea. "We cannot stop China from doing this thing, even the Americans were not able to stop it,” Mr Duterte said on Sunday. "So what do you want me to do? Declare war against China? I can, but we'll all lose our military and policemen tomorrow, and we are a destroyed nation,” he said. His remarks come after reports China plans to build an "environmental monitoring station” on Scarborough Shoal off the north-western Philippines.
