Dylan claims cycling gold medals

DYLAN Newbery's decision to concentrate on cycling has paid immediate dividends with the Maryborough 18-year-old claiming two state gold medals.

Newbery, a former state triathlon champion, blitzed his rivals at the Queensland Cycling Championships on the Gold Coast to take gold in the junior 19 men's individual time trial in a time of 24min 25.14sec.

Two weeks earlier the young Fraser Coast Cycling Club member powered to victory in the Queensland Elite Road Championships in Goombungee.

Newbery broke away from the pack early in the 119km road race then fought off a late challenge from Rockhampton's Dylan Nankivell to take the win.

The former Aldridge State High School student capped off his stellar campaign with a bronze medal in the criterium event to go with his two gold medals.
