Edna's still on target
MARYBOROUGH’S Edna Scott has been playing darts for 50 years – and has enjoyed every minute of it.
She originally took it up so she had something to do while her husband, an active sportsperson himself, played football and cricket.
Her friend started doing the sport and when her team was short one night, Edna volunteered to play – and never looked back.
“It’s been good fun over the years,” she said.
“I started in February or March of 1959 – I played and stayed.
“I’ve had a lot of wins and losses.”
Edna loves playing with Maryborough Darts Association and says the social side of the sport has also given her a lot of pleasure, especially since her husband passed away 23 years ago.
“I used to play in Sydney and Newcastle and in the Friendship Shield once a year.”
Scott is originally from Kingaroy. She met her husband and settled in Maryborough and has always loved the town.
“I just thought it was a lovely place.
“I like it here very much – I met my husband here.”
She soon settled into a routine of played darts on a Thursday night and a Saturday afternoon and, while she has slowed down a bit these days, she still loves going along and giving darts a go.
She now plays every Thursday night.
“I am slacking off a bit now,” she said.
“But I’m still enjoying it.
“I’m probably not as strong as I was but it’s still a great social outlet.
“We go to the hall to play and I love the people.
“The company is really great.”
The others at the club are reluctant to let her go too – “they say darts might stop if I don’t keep going,” Scott said with a laugh.
