Corbin elbowed out of Major League’s Opening Series

BASEBALL: "This is neat, having Major League Baseball come out to Sydney. This is a beautiful place."

Those were Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Pat Corbin's words of optimism late last year.

The left-handed hurler had just arrived in Sydney to help launch the Major League's Opening Series, featuring his team and the LA Dodgers, to be played in Australia for the first time at the SCG this weekend.

Although softly spoken, Corbin, who earns a low $500,000 per season by MLB standards, couldn't contain his excitement at making history.

He was to throw the opening pitch of the highly-anticipated series for the Diamondbacks on Saturday night at the hallowed cricket ground.

But that optimism was cruelly cut short when news filtered through on Sunday that the All Star was not getting on the plane Down Under.

During a Spring Training game versus the Cleveland Indians last week, Corbin sustained damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.

That meant he was most likely headed towards season-ending Tommy John (elbow) surgery.

It was a terrible blow for the 24-year-old.

Corbin spoke with APN at an Opening Series promotion last year about how 2013 was his best one yet in the Major League.

He desperately wanted to continue that form this year.

"I just went in to Spring Training and knew if I did what I was capable of doing, I'd be able to make the ball club and hopefully have the best season I could," he said at the time.

Corbin went 14-8 with a 3.41 ERA in 32 starts in 2013, subsequently making his first appearance as an All Star.

He was also named the D-backs' Most Valuable Pitcher in just his second full season in the Majors.

But those dreams for Corbin, who also excelled at American football during high school, came crashing down ever so quickly.

This is kind of all new to me, so it's disappointing," an obviously shaken Corbin said in a news conference after receiving the bad news.

Wade Miley will take his place on the mound in the opener.
