Elderly man airlifted from Fraser after shirt catches fire

AN 83-year-old man was airlifted from Fraser Island to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital for specialist burns treatment.

The man, who was on holiday at Happy Valley, suffered serious burns after his shirt caught fire while he cooked over a gas stove.

The Sunshine Coast-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was tasked to the island about 8.40am on Saturday.

2016-17 was a record year for LifeFlight for lifesaving missions with its aeromedical crews, community helicopters and Air Ambulance jets performing a record 5252 missions throughout Queensland and around the world.
