OPINION: Mobi-Mat winner in beach plan for Fraser Coast
THE best thing about living on the Fraser Coast is without a doubt our beautiful outdoors lifestyle.
But for hundreds of people with mobility issues, it's hard or even impossible to enjoy the simple pleasures like going for a dip - or at least it has been until now.
For the cost of less than a small bus shelter, the Fraser Coast Regional Council has promised to invest in an innovative idea that will add significant quality of life for numerous families with the planned installation of beach-accessible matting.
With our calm water and perfect sand, not to mention a high number of people on aged and disability pensions, it is hard to imagine a better place to become Queensland's first truly wheelchair-friendly beach.
The best part of the Mobi-Mat, apart from its excellent cost-to-benefit ratio, is that it is not a permanent fixture so will not be at risk when king tides or flooding become a problem.
It is no wonder the people of the Fraser Coast have been clamouring for just such a device here.
It won't just be a benefit for local families either - it is certain to draw a lot of attention from holiday-makers to the region.
That is something the Fraser Coast can be proud of.
