What you need to know about THAT shark photo

IT'S the photo that made Facebook users of the Sunshine Coast nervous about going into the water.

Coast photographer Kieran Tunbridge captured the image of Charles Beak kicking back in the ocean, apparently unaware of the dark shape circling behind his head.

With shark attacks increasingly in the news it's not surprising people would be wary of shark sightings, but here's the thing: it's a fake.

Sunshine Coast Community Board follower Terry Daly caught onto the ruse early.

"Is this true or one of those trick pics?" Terry asked.

Flew the drone over @theendlessbummer2 little did he know what was lurking below him!! They've been hanging around. Got chased out of the lineup lastnight#riskitforthebiscuit

Mr Tunbridge said the hoax was meant as some harmless fun between a group of mates and as a means of crowd control when big swell attracts big crowds.

"Things have been pretty hectic with holidays and every time any swell pops up every media company hypes it up," he said.

But the fake sighting was inspired by a real danger.

"My friend and I admittedly did get chased in Monday afternoon right on dark by something longer than me and a lot rounder," Mr Tunbridge said.
