Expect a Census worker to knock on your door soon

IT HAS been described as the "country's largest ever peacetime logistical operation", but one of 38,000 Census field officers may soon be knocking on your door.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has hired the field officers over the course of the last few months, but their jobs may be even more important after Tuesday's debacle.

Only two million people were able to complete the Census online before the website was taken offline.

Head of the Census Program Duncan Young said people had until September 23 to fill it out online, or they could phone the Census Inquiry Service on 1300 214 531 for a hard copy.

"Just be sure to complete the form as if it were Census night as soon as possible," he said.

"Census Field Officers will begin visiting households that have not completed the Census from late-August to ensure that everyone can take part."

Remember: regardless of when you complete the Census, it must be done based on what you were up to on Tuesday, August 9.
