Explore the rich heritage of Murgon

IF YOU'RE after a change of scenery, why not take a trip inland and visit the town of Murgon.

Named after the Aboriginal word meaning "lily pond", Murgon is a tiny township known for its proximity to the famous Aboriginal reserve, Cherbourg.

Learn the history of dairying and how life was for the early settlers who used to hand-churn butter and cheese.

If you fancy an overnight-stay, a spot of fishing or family picnic, Yallakool Tourist Park offers all that and more.

There's a tennis court, barbecues and picnic tables, a children's playground and a swimming pool.

It is a family friendly park.

Yallakool is home to one of the best camp-kitchens in the South Burnett.

Equipped with a fridge, microwave, barbecues, stove, hotplates and a fire pit with ample room for sitting.

It's the place to meet all of your camping neighbours to discuss where you've been and your big catch on the dam over some local cheese and wine.

BOAT MOUNTAIN REGIONAL PARK

Boat Mountain is a local landmark in the Murgon area, offering a great nature walk, especially for those who enjoy birdwatching with at least 46 species noted.

Relax and enjoy nature in this small park.

Have a picnic with a view on the edge of the park.

Only picnic tables are provided.

Walk to two lookouts for views over the surrounding countryside.

Go birdwatching. The park has at least 46 species of birds including rufous whistlers, black-faced cuckoo-shrikes, double-barred finches, red-backed wrens, honeyeaters, fantails, doves and pigeons. You might also see black-striped wallabies and echidnas by day or pygmy-possums and sugar gliders at night.

See the dish-shaped impressions on the track made by the black-breasted button-quail as it spins around feeding. Bandicoot diggings can be seen along the track.

Camping is not allowed in the park.

This distinctive flat-topped ridge shaped like an upturned boat is covered in dry rainforest and open eucalypt woodland.

At 589m, Boat Mountain is a local landmark in the Murgon area and the headwaters of four creeks.

Most of the vegetation was originally hoop pine rainforest but now is a mixture of softwood scrub and vine thicket following logging.

More than 130 plant species grow here including rare plants. Common trees include the small-leaved tuckeroo, white tamarind, leopard ash and native holly.

The park also contains grassy open eucalypt woodland with stringybarks and grey gums.
