Fairy penguin spotted on eastern beach of Fraser Island
A FAIRY penguin has been spotted on the eastern beach of Fraser Island, just north of the Maheno shipwreck.
Cathedrals on Fraser managing director Cathy Whitaker said she had never heard of a penguin on the island in her 50-year association with the area.
'It was very bizarre to see a penguin this far north, must have got its bearing wrong," she said.
"It was just standing there all alone.
"It was really, really odd."
Cathy said the penguin, which was seen on Sunday, seemed to be in good health before swimming away.
The penguin sighting follows the rare stranding of killer whales near Fraser Island earlier this month.
