Fans left satisfied after world premiere of The Hobbit

THERE will be some sun burnt people in Wellington today.

Punters waited for hours, some overnight, in the sun on an uncharacteristically non-windy day in the capital yesterday for the world premiere of The Hobbit.

It was a jolly atmosphere, as if Christmas had come early for the 100,000-strong crowd, which was a mix of locals and international travelers from as far away as the UK, China, Japan and the US.

The clean-up in Wellington begins today, including the roll up of the 500-meter long red carpet, which stretched so far down Courtenay Place that it had a hobbit market halfway along it like a pit stop.

International media outlets covering the event are on their way to Hobbiton today for a set visit and more interviews with the dwarf actors.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens in Australia on Boxing Day.
