THE quick actions of farmers at the scene of a large chemical spill at Brookstead Tuesday afternoon have been credited with preventing a potentially deadly situation.

Farmers near the spill site swiftly turned off a valve which had caused the leak just after 4pm Tuesday off the Gore Hwy near the grain silos.

As Queensland Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the site, the farmers shut off the leaking valve stopping the further spread of the toxic chemical and mitigated a potentially deadly situation.

The Gore Hwy was shut for a short while as QFES crews assessed the situation before they declared the scene safe.
