Fearless storm chaser captures winning calendar shot

HIS fellow photographer was calling emergency services about a fire during a lightning storm while Higgins Storm Chasing's Grant Rolph set up his camera to capture a rare shot.

The picture was published in The Chronicle in early January and has now been selected to appear in the Sky Weather and News calendar for 2014.

Mr Rolph said he was in Cecil Plains chasing a storm for Higgins Storm Chasing (the Facebook page) with fellow photographer Jamie Nichols.

"It was a pretty active storm and we were out in the middle of nowhere," he said.

"We soon discovered a grass fire which had been started by the lightning.

"So while Jamie called in the coordinates (to the emergency services) I set up my camera and hoped to get a good shot."

Mr Rolph said he had a few minutes to play with the settings on his camera and the end result was a spectacular shot.

He said lighting photos were quite common but to get something in the foreground as well was "pretty cool".

Mr Rolph, who is an apprentice plumber by day, started taking photos for Higgins Storm Chasing about 12 months ago, after finally finding an avenue to bring his interest in photography and severe weather together.

Another Toowoomba photographer, Steve Bunter of SAB Amateur Photos, will also have an image published in the calendar.
