Fire guts house at Torquay

INVESTIGATIONS will continue today into the cause of a fire that gutted a house on a 60-acre property at Torquay yesterday morning.

Holidaymaker Luke Holloway, who returns home to Japan today, was the first on the scene just before 11am.

He ran around the home, which was already filled with flames, making sure that no one was inside.

After discovering that, thankfully, the person who is renting the house was out at the time, Mr Holloway took photographs of the burning building.

He initially thought the blaze was a grass fire.

Emergency services were called to the blaze on Hughes Road about 10.55am after calls from neighbours who noticed smoke billowing from the low-set house.

Firefighters said the house was “well and truly alight” when they arrived.

They were unsure of the cause of the fire.

It took about half an hour for the flames to destroy the timber house, which the Chronicle believes is owned by a development company.
