Firefighters back-burning at Susan River to fight grassfire

MULTIPLE Rural Fire Service Queensland crews and Department of Natural Resources and Mines personnel will return to the scene of a large grassfire burning in the vicinity of Settlers Rd, Susan River on Wednesday morning.

"Motorists should drive with caution and residents susceptible to respiratory conditions should close their doors and windows and keep medications close by," a Department of Community Safety representative said.

The fire, which broke out about 2pm on Tuesday, poses no threat to property, the representative said, and firefighters would work to strengthen containment lines by constructing fire breaks and conducting back-burning operations in the area on Wednesday.

"Residents are urged to remain vigilant and immediately call 000 if they believe their home is under threat," the representative said.

"A large smoke haze is expected to blanket Susan River and surrounds, and winds may carry the haze as far as Hervey Bay."
