FOR US Marine Captain Matt Parsons, fitness isn't about big biceps and a six pack, it's a matter of life and death.

"We always need to be in a state of readiness, because you never know when you're going to be called upon," he said while working out at Camp Rocky.

Captain Parsons is here working in force protection, protecting Talisman Saber from outside threats, including terrorism.

But he usually works as an artillery officer, and it's taken him on two tours of Afghanistan.

US Marines are tested twice a year on their physical fitness, and most devote at least an hour of each day to staying strong, fit and ready for combat.

Captain Parsons is no exception, working out five times a week, twice a day, and does light cardio on his 'rest days'. "No matter where you are Marines will find a gym or make a gym," he said. "Even at a remote post in Afghanistan they'll fill ammo cans with sand and lift them. When it comes to working out Marines are MacGyver."

The Marines are trained in a special form of martial arts and are all trained riflemen. Captain Parsons also has a 20 year wrestling career under his belt.

"For marines you need to be able to work on power, strength, flexibility, condition, all in one package," he said.

FITNESS in the US Marine Corps focuses on function to prepare marines for combat. This workout is especially designed for US Marines and can be done anywhere without the need for equipment. Remember to warm up before and stretch afterwards!
