Five-year-old drowning victim dies

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl who was found face down and unconscious in a Goodna pool on Monday has died in hospital.

As reported in The Queensland Times, the young girl had finished swimming with her father at the Goodna Aquatic Centre when she wandered away from him about 1.20pm.

A staff member pulled the unconscious girl from the 1.2m deep pool and performed CPR and gave her oxygen until Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics arrived.

A QAS spokesman said paramedics performed CPR on the way to Mater Children’s Hospital because the girl was not breathing and her heart had stopped beating.

The incident came just over 24 hours after a five-year-old boy was found unconscious on the bottom of the Newmarket pool in Brisbane.

The boy was transported to the Royal Children’s Hospital and was in a serious but stable condition.
Four years ago, on September 24, 2005, Matthew Case, 3, drowned at the Goodna Aquatic Centre.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the Goodna Aquatic Centre was leased to Australian Crawl Goodna, which managed the pool.

Cr Pisasale said the council would work with the company to “review and implement any recommendations that come from the investigation”.

“Council will allow police and Workplace Health and Safety officers to thoroughly investigate today’s incident,” Cr Pisasale said yesterday.

“Council also conducts monthly safety audits at all swim centres within the city.”

He said the prayers and thoughts of the council and the community were with the family of the young girl.
