Teen suspect of wheelie bin arson

POLICE are searching for a teenage boy seen riding from the scene of a house fire in Maryborough early yesterday morning.

Senior Sergeant Tony Cole said the fire started under the Waterson Street house about 2.45am.

A newspaper deliverer raised the alarm and firefighters rushed to the scene.

“It was a high-set Queenslander house split into four units,” Snr Sgt Cole said yesterday.

“The fire started under unit two, which was unoccupied,” he said.

“Somebody took a wheelie bin from the footpath and placed it under the house and ignited it.

“The wheelie bin caught fire and melted and a small gate next to the bin was scorched but there was no structural damage to the building.”

A teenage boy was seen riding away from the scene on a pushbike.

“He was wearing a red shirt with a yellow dragon motif on the back,” Snr Sgt Cole said.

Maryborough firefighters extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes.

The residents of the other three units were not home at the time of the fire.

Anyone who has information about the fire or the youth seen riding away can call police on 4123 8111 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
