FLASHING lights to warn drivers as students come and go from St Helen's State School have been installed almost a year after parents first called for them.

The school's P&C association began campaigning for the lights through a petition that gained more than 700 signatures last May.

Their petition finally came to fruition on Thursday as crews installed the lights.

MP Anne Maddern, who tabled the petition in parliament, said the lights were particularly important for St Helen's because it is on Maryborough-Hervey Bay, which carries more than 10,000 cars a day.

She said the flashing lights were a visual reminder to motorists in the 80km/h section who  may not notice the time.
