Focus just on Eagles, says Hawks star Gunston
HAWTHORN forward Jack Gunston concedes the Hawks must lower expectation and focus solely on defeating West Coast on Sunday.
Under Alastair Clarkson's reign, the Hawks have built their golden era around top-four finishes.
But a 0-4 start to the season has forced a rethink, as the Hawks face an uphill battle just to qualify for September action let alone a coveted double chance.
Gunston is confident the Hawks can get back to their best.
"It can turn around in a half of footy, in a game of footy," he said.
"We just need a few things to click and a few people to gel and we'll get that Hawthorn brand of footy playing the way we want it to.
"It takes a few good days on the track, good moments out in the field and you can get that confidence straight away."
The Hawks held a closed training session at Waverley Park as preparations begin to ramp up towards Sunday's crunch game against West Coast at the MCG.
"If we look too far ahead we're going to catch ourselves out so the West Coast game is our full focus and we need to get that win on the board," Gunston said.
Former Hawk Sam Mitchell (leg) remains in doubt for the game but Gunston hopes to see his premiership teammate in action.
If Mitchell does play, Gunston says he will be treated like any other player in an Eagles guernsey.
"It'll be weird seeing him (Sam Mitchell) in a West Coast guernsey, but once we are out there he is just any opposition player."
