Former Labor MP Craig Thomson cops $458,000 fine

FORMER federal Labor MP Craig Thomson has been ordered to fork out more than $458,000 for misusing union funds between 2003 and 2007 while head of the Health Services Union.

He has been ordered by the Federal Court to pay a fine of $80,000 to the Fair Work Commission with the balance of the money to go to the HSU.

Thomson did not appear at the hearing and Justice Christopher Jessup was scathing in his assessment of the disgraced MP's conduct.

He said Thomson had not shown any contrition or appreciation of the seriousness of the matters against him, and had improperly used the money and his position to gain personal advantage, to the detriment of the union.

Thomson's misuse of union funds extended to payment for brothel visits, hotels, travel for him and his wife, and his campaign for the federal seat of Dobell, the court heard.

In December last year, Thomson was fined $25,000 after being found guilty of 13 charges of theft against the HSU.

He was acquitted of 51 charges.
