Fraser Coast airports to flourish

URBAN encroachment at Caloundra, Caboolture and Archerfield airports has created “a fertile ground” for Fraser Coast airports to flourish.

“We need bigger, better, safer use of our airports,” Fraser Coast councillor Gerard O’Connell said yesterday.

Mr O’Connell’s comments came in the wake of the council’s decision to waive casual landing fees in Maryborough and Hervey Bay and embark on a period of consultation with the aviation community.

The council had budgeted for about $30,000 a year in terms of revenue to be raised from the landing charges.

“Collecting the pennies doesn’t make economic sense. I don’t think it’s a great cost or loss to our ratepayers.

“It’s time to stop thinking of them as costs but as investments in our economic future.

“We are laying out the economic welcome mat.

“We need to start putting aviation projects into our capital works plans.”
