Keep Fraser as Fraser: Truss
FRASER Island should be called Fraser Island.
That's the verdict of Wide Bay MP Warren Truss in the wake of calls to change the name of the island to k'gari or gari.
He said that while he was sensitive to the wishes of the native Butchulla people, millions of dollars worth of advertising would be for nothing if the name of the island was changed.
“The name Fraser Island is synonymous with its World Heritage listing status,” Mr Truss said.
“Fraser Island enjoys an international reputation for its natural attractions and any move to change the island's name would impact on tourism and jobs.
“Given the fragile local economy, the region can ill afford another economic shock.”
