Frerichs five-fa fills bowling void for Scrubby
BATSMEN beware, Jakob Frerichs is apparently pretty handy with the ball, too.
The Walkerston top order bat has made runs for fun so far this season, but it was his leg spin which caused the most damage in Scrubby’s big win over Souths in round two of the DBCT Poole Cup.
With incumbent spinner Joel Bock missing in action, Frerichs filled the void and made short work of the Sharks’ middle order with a quick-fire five-wicket haul.
So damaging was the batting all-rounder’s leg spin that Walkerston skipper Luke Kennedy rode the hot hand, preferring Frerichs over more his more established bowlers.
The man himself took great pride in his bowling feat.
“It’s actually my first time getting a five-fa, so I have to be pretty happy with that,” Frerichs said.
“It’s good to be able to contribute with the ball and help the team get a win.”
Following Bock’s similar five-wicket haul in round one, Frerichs joked he would have to get in the skipper’s ear about supplanting Bock as the lead spinner on his return to the team.
“We have a pretty handy bowling side. It’s generally only when someone like Joel is away that I get a chance,” Frerichs said.
“He had the five-fa last weekend, now it’s my turn. Hopefully I get preference next time.”
The breakthrough milestone could be a key indicator that Frerichs’ work in the nets with the ball might finally be starting to pay off.
“I’ve always been given a few overs the past few seasons (but) I probably haven’t bowled as well as I’ve wanted to,” he said.
“Building that confidence in my own ability is important. And it’s good when the skipper shows he has that confidence in me as well.”
