Freshwater vows to ignite Wide Bay's bowling attack
HERVEY Bay's Tom Freshwater said he is excited by the chance to spearhead Wide Bay's bowling attack for its Denis O'Dea Shield Under-19 Championship, starting in Urangan on Saturday.
The two-day tournament will be contested by Queensland Country southern conference representative teams Darling Downs and South West Blue, Darling Downs and South West Green, South East Queensland and Wide Bay.
Freshwater, a left-arm paceman, finds himself leading the attack on his home pitch after Bundaberg's Matt Gavin was forced to withdraw.
The former South Queensland under-17 representative, who missed last year's carnival due to an elbow injury, said he was ready for the challenge.
"I'm feeling pretty good this year and feeling comfortable with my action," Freshwater said.
"A lot of our opposition are playing a high level cricket within their respective clubs so they've got a fair bit of experience.
"I'll have to keep my bowling tight because they'll punish anything short."
Wide Bay failed to notch a win in last year's tournament.
Despite missing the services of Gavin and opening batsman Steve Grogan, Freshwater was confident Wide Bay, which boasts four Fraser Coast players, would improve on last year's showing.
"We've got a side that can put a lot of runs on the board and while our bowling attack might not be as strong as it could be, I'm sure our bowlers will bowl well and take a few wickets and keep the runs down."
