Friends remember dedicated Coastguard volunteer
THE annual Coast Guard Sandy Straits Freedom fishing competition shared a solemn moment with competitors on the weekend as volunteers scattered the ashes of long-time volunteer and keen fisherman Barry Shorter.
Coast Guard Sandy Straits commander Jukka Manttari said the coast guard chaplain performed the ceremony in the waters of Tuan Strait.
"He loved fishing," he said.
"That was his (Mr Shorter's) favourite spot."
Mr Mantarri said Mr Shorter, who passed away earlier this year, was a great fundraiser for the coast guard and had previously helped to run its former magazine.
A Barry Shorter trophy has been introduced to the fishing competition and was awarded for the first time on Sunday.
