Fun in the sun for juniors

SATURDAY’S heat was the only down side to what was a great day of fun competition for the young athletes of the Fraser Coast.

Competitors from Maryborough, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Gympie took part in an intercity carnival on Saturday.

The kids competed in long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, javelin and track events.

Maryborough and Gympie were strongly represented on the day and the events were contested in the spirit of friendly rivalry. About 158 kids competed. Organiser Kevin Revill said that numbers were down but the kids still had a great time – and weren’t afraid to say so.

Maryborough’s Luke Peterson won the under-9s boys 800m event while Luke Calleja was second. The two boys said they were having a ball at the event.

“It’s just good fun,” Calleja said, adding that he would be competing across all the other events

Keely Reilly, 8, was first in the 800m girls event with Jemma Ible second.
