WILDLIFE conservationists say Henderson Park's koala population is far from safe - despite the developer putting a hold on bulldozing and offering to sell the land to the council.

Natalie Richardson said it was "just talk" between developer Ron Blyth and the council at this stage.

"(Mr Blyth) has put a proposition to the council and is prepared to sell ... but if it's not sold, he's going to develop it," she said.

Mr Blyth has consistently declined to comment.

His company Belela Pty Ltd was given permission to clear the 25 hectares of land, described as "pristine koala habitat", in 2011 as part of stage four of housing estate Henderson Park.

They started bulldozing last month - but after clearing about half Mr Blyth appeared to have a change of heart and offered to sell the property to the council to preserve the remaining koala habitat.

Ms Richardson, a member of Fraser Coast branch of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland, said although Mr Blyth's offer was positive, residents needed to continue putting pressure on the council.

"(Mr Blyth) saw how many koalas lived in there," she said.

"Now (the council) needs to make this happen.

"They should not have approved it in the first place."

Ms Richardson has started circulating a photograph of a local koala and her baby which she says shows why it is so important to protect the area.

She encouraged residents to visit the Koalas Fraser Coast Facebook page or sign the petition at Janet's Art Books to show their support.
