Gaiter snaps Queensland spot

MARYBOROUGH darts player Ben Gaiter is off to his first national championship since 2005 after a stellar performance at the state under-25 zone team championships in Toowoomba.

The 24-year-old finished second behind Brisbane's Ricky Jones to ensure he would represent Queensland at the national championships in Tasmania later this year.

"It's the first time I've ever tried out for under-25 so I knew it was going to be tough," Gaiter, who has been playing darts for 10 years, said.

"I was confident I would make it because I've been following the circuit around hoping the experience would help."

Despite throwing well in Toowoomba, Gaiter, a member of the Maryborough and District Darts Association, said he had more to offer.

"I played well, but I still haven't peaked," he said.

"Now I'm in the team, I'm going to spend a lot more time practising."
