Gentle giants focus of event
TRAITS of strength, patience and the docile temperament of a heavy horse is what made them indispensable to generations of pre-industrial farmers.
Which is why the crew at Garden of Weeden in Miva have planned a terrific event to celebrate the achievements of these gentle giants who are still used today for a multitude of purposes, including farming, showing, logging and recreation.
The Heavy Horse and Harness Day is set to be held this Saturday on over 200 acres at the Garden of Weeden grounds, situated 13km off the Bruce Highway from Gunalda.
Harness clubs are expected to travel from as far as Coolangatta and Toowoomba to attend the inaugural two-day event.
A host of activities are planned for Saturday including heavy horse and harness demonstrations, trail riders and their pack horses arriving at about noon. Camping is available at $5 a person a night.
A country music night on Saturday will entertain guests before rising at 7am on Sunday for a Hobby Farmers Market where the fun will continue until noon.
Organisers say if you can grow it, make it, hatch it, breed it or fix it and you are looking for a place to sell it, this is the market for you.
Stock yards are available. Market sites are $10 each.
A portion of all funds raised will be donated to the Rescue Flight Helicopter Service.
