Get ready to be wowed by partial solar eclipse at 5.15pm

At 5.15pm on Tuesday, grab your camera and get outside to witness an incredible sight.

A partial solar eclipse will darken the skies starting just before sunset, according to astronomer Dave Reneke.

"Bit by bit, a part of the sun will appear to be eaten away like a little Pac-Man as the moon passes slowly between us and the sun," he said.

"Progressively, the new moon will obscure up to 50% of the solar disc."

He reminded people never to look directly at the sun or even peek at it through a camera viewfinder - but said dramatic photographs of a "crescent sun" could be captured with a filtered camera.
