Girls power to grand final glory
BASKETBALL: Gladstone Port City Power are the under-14 queens of the court after winning the grand final of the State Championships in Cairns.
Power won 58-49 against Southern Districts Trojans White after scores were level at half-time.
"It is a fantastic result and we went down to them by 30 points in the earlier rounds and to turn around was massive," jubilant Power coach Rowan Harvey said.
His daughter Erin Harvey was felled heavily, but others stepped up.
"Basically we just wanted to play each ball and believe that we are to make each shot," Harvey said.
Jordan Porter shot a game-high 14 points while Kadee Barrenger played another strong game with 12 points.
Eli Walsh was also superb with 11.
Trojans' best were Brianna Holder with 10 points and Megan Lawry (eight points).
"With two minutes to go, I knew we had it," Harvey said.
The news was not so great for the Power U14 boy's who were outclassed by Brisbane Capitals Bronze 78-62.
In front of a home crowd, Capitals' shooting was on to lead 26-19 and 43-35 at the first two breaks.
Foul trouble to Haizyn Mellars and Ben Knight - both leading scorers throughout the previous seven games - meant the pair had to sit out the bulk of the third quarter when Brisbane made their mark for a 58-44 lead.
Baskets to Albert Maunga and Ben closed it to 60-48, but Capitals had all the answers.
Albert and Nick Lantry did all they could with 21 and 17 points respectively.
Nick's shooting was a feature and he is one of Gladstone's most improved players.
Brisbane had an even spread of scorers with Levi McAuliffe superb with 17, Dominic Patapan (15) and Darcy Olsenn (14) all starring in the decider.
