Giving back to volunteers

AFTER another hectic year of deliveries the volunteers at Hervey Bay Meals on Wheels have been rewarded with a special Christmas lunch at Kingfisher Bay Resort.

About 26 volunteers were whisked away to the Fraser Island resort on Sunday for a well-deserved celebration.

General Manager of Tours and Marine David Hay said the resort was pleased to work with Jenny Sorensen, wife of local MP Ted Sorensen, and a Meals on Wheels volunteer to “help the helpers” enjoy a special Christmas.

Hervey Bay Meals on Wheels manager Avis Cropley said the day was a way to thank the volunteers for their countless hours of work throughout the year.

Ms Cropley said the branch started serving 13 clients a week in 1968 and now serves 1300 meals every week.

She is expecting the next couple of weeks to be busier than usual due to fewer staff and said the only break would be a day off on Christmas.
