‘Despicable’ bikie threat to elderly woman

A RECOVERING drug addict who threatened a 72-year-old woman she would be put in the hands of a bikie gang if she didn't pay her $20,000 has been sentenced to 12 months prison.

The elderly lady was told the money was owed because her deceased husband was behind on money he owed to corrupt police officers.

The alleged "protection money debt" never existed.

Sonya Jodie Schaechtili, 46, pleaded guilty to demanding property with menaces with intent to steal among other charges in the Southport District Court today.

Schaechtili made the demands between October and December 2015 and again in August 2016 to the elderly woman.

The woman demanded the money to pay a non-existent “police protection” debt.
The woman demanded the money to pay a non-existent “police protection” debt.

The woman was sceptical and did not hand over any money, even after Schaechtili said she would be "in the hands" of bikies if she didn't hand over the $20,000.

The woman tried to verify the debt existed and contacted police.

Judge Brian Devereaux said Schaechtili's conduct was "despicable".

Schaechtili was sentenced to 12 month prison with a parole release date set from yesterday.

The 136 days she had already spent in custody were declared as time already served.

She had been in custody for stealing building material from a work site in May this year.

Schaechtili's co-accused Derwent Rowley Saunders, 37, was sentenced last month on charges of demanding sums of money to gain benefit, dangerous drugs and an additional unrelated charge of grievous bodily harm.

Saunders was sentenced to five years prison with parole eligibility next month.
