Golden celebrations for Kai Puna

KAI PUNA Outrigger Canoe Club went away to the OC1 and OC2 national titles last weekend – and came home with a fistful of medals.

Jenny Everist and Donetta Karlen won the gold medal in the master womens division, a 25km course – not a bad effort considering the team in second place finished 15 minutes behind them.

The event, which includes surf, ski and paddle board categories, also included competitors from Hawaii and California.

The national and international competitors were no match for the outriggers of the Fraser Coast though.

Te Otimi Patara came home with two gold medals. The Kai Puna junior competed in four events on the day.

His first gold medal came in the under-14 OC1 4km race and the other was in the under-14 OC2 4km race.
