GOLF CHALLENGE: 50-year tradition boxes on

IT STARTED as a function for Wallaroo Hockey Club members to meet during the off-season.

Now, the club's Boxing Day Golf Challenge will celebrate 50 years.

The annual event was started by former club president and team captain Joe Oliver for players to meet during the off-season.

Some members of the original squad have died since, but the tradition has stayed strong.

"The numbers have fallen away a little over the years but it's our hope that it will be carried on by the club's younger members,” original Wallaroos player Bruce Sprake said.

The Boxing Day event is open only to current and former players, families, invited friends and supporters of Wallaroo Hockey Club. The challenge will tee off at 6am.

Hervey Bay RSL will sponsor this year's event.
