Governor-General Quentin Bryce prepares to bow out

PRIME Minister Tony Abbott has wished Governor-General Quentin Bryce well for her future, as she prepares for her final official function in the role before she hands the reins to General Peter Cosgrove tomorrow.

Mr Abbott met Her Excellency at Government House in Canberra this morning for a brief conversation where he congratulated her on fulfilling the role with "care, comfort, compassion and inspiration".

"If we think our mission in life is to be our beset selves, it's also to inspire others to be their best selves, and you've certainly done that," he said.

Governor-General Bryce said she was inspired by what she had learnt during her wide travels across the country in her five years as the Queen's Australian representative.

She said she had observed "the very fineest qualities" among the Australians she had met, and she had great respect and admiration for the selflessness many people showed in their daily lives.

The Governor-General will host a farewell dinner in Parliament House tonight, before an official ceremony hands over the duties of the office to former Defence Force Chief, General Peter Cosgrove.
