Racers compete at speedway
HE’S ON TOP of the ladder for now – but whether he can hold on to top spot remains to be seen.
Cairns Modified Production flyer Johnno Collins is currently in first place on the Masondale Heavy Haulage Fraser Coast Championship point’s ladder and will make the 3000km round trip to defend his position tonight.
He had a comprehensive win in the last round of the series, held over New Year’s, and holds a narrow 20 point lead over Cooroy’s Aidan Raymont, who will also be a big chance this Saturday night among the 34-car field.
Raymont, who is a former Australian Champion, will be hoping to take the lead from Collins tonight – but he will also be looking to keep his car in good shape, with him and plenty of others heading off to Tasmania next week to compete at the Australian titles.
Mark Raymont, currently fourth in the series, did not nominate for the event, which will leave the field open for other competitors, including Dennis Shallcross, Craig Fenz, Todd Doyle, Ashley Barron and Darryl Etherden.
All are within striking distance of the top 10 and will be looking to jump up the ladder in the fourth round of the Fraser Coast Drivers Championship.
Former dual Australian champion Todd Doyle is coming off an epic win at the Modified Production 30/30 event last weekend at Mothar Mountain Speedway and, with his new found confidence and speed, he won’t be leaving anything to chance tonight.
Also nominated are New South Wales racers Quinton and Max Clarke who have shown plenty of speed so far this season.
Kingaroy’s Brett Barron, Gympie’s Brett Baxter and Brisbane’s Mark Ferguson all have what it takes to win and will also be looking for points tonight.
Also on tonight is the Midget Speedcars, which will be racing in the Danny Davidson memorial event.
Davidson was a legend of midget racing in Queensland and Australia for many decades and a great field of about 20 cars have nominated to ensure his legend continues to grow.
A great field of 25 junior sedans will contest the Queensland title tonight as well. Gates will open at 1pm with action starting at 4pm.
