Graduates set for a bright future

THE future is bright for University of Southern Queensland graduates Eleni Tsikleas and Robin O'Neill.

They have donned their gowns, rolled their certificates and cut loose for a night of celebration.

Now their sights are set on building careers.

Despite both graduating from the School of Education, their paths are poles apart.

After four years of late-night study sessions, Ms Tsikleas was looking forward to inflicting her own scholarly commands on a class.

"I'm going to do either classroom teaching or PE - I'll be happy either way," she said.

"The best thing about uni was that you rarely had to go to class.

"You can do it from home."

No such luck for her own students - truancy will not be an option for her young wards.

Fellow graduate Mr O'Neill earned a Graduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching as an addendum to his Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree.

The former Centenary Heights student has already landed a job at Mitchell State School as a high school science and maths teacher.

"I'm not worried about moving away - if you get offered a job, you take it," he said.

"I'm going to start off teaching and then move into research somewhere down the track.

"I'm really interested in immunology and would love to do research on tissue rejection.

"Ideally, I'd like to end up working on the Sunshine Coast.

"I'm no great surfer, but I'll give it a go."
