Greens health policy to provide funds for rural hospitals

UP TO $500 million would be quarantined for rural and regional hospitals under a $1.5 billion health policy released by the Greens on Wednesday.

A third of the $1.5 billion would go to rural hospitals, while a further $1.1 billion will also go primarily to rural mental health services.

Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said health policy should be about "making sure your health doesn't depend on you bank balance or your postcode".

The promises form part of an overall $9 billion health package, which includes the quarantining of Medicare Locals and the National Preventative Health Agency from budget cuts.

Greens pledges for rural areas also included $200 million infrastructure grants for regional clinics, $20 million for rural doctor training and fixing the classification system governing incentives for doctors.

Senator Richard Di Natale said the policies were an effort to help people stay out of hospital, not just treating patients when sick.
