GREG "The Tarantula" Atzori first met Trent James in Thailand in 2012.
"He said he was going to start up a promotion and he invited me to take part," Atzori said yesterday.
Atzori accepted the open invitation, but schedules and plans hadn't lined up.
Fast forward five years and Atzori will finally feature on James's next Hex Fight Series event.
"About two months ago I sent out a few emails saying I was managing myself and to see what was available," Atzori said.
"I had a few offers come up, but when it came to negotiating they just didn't offer the same as what I usually get. Hex came up with something great, and there's a great opponent, so it was pretty easy."
Atzori was scheduled for an appearance at Absolute Championship Bekut's (ACB) Australian debut on December 9, but the deal fell through.
"It would've been great but our needs didn't match up," Atzori said.
It's cleared the path for Atzori, who has recently battled illness, to debut at Hex 12. Atzori will face off against Lance "Lights Out" Ettia at the event, which will be held at Melbourne Pavilion, on November 24.
Ettia returns to Hex for the first time since TKO win against Raphael Scott at Hex 8 on March 31.
The Melbournian boasts a 5-0 win-loss record, but could face his toughest test yet in Atzori. The Hervey Bay grappler boasts an 18-10 record, but has won just one of his past four bouts.
Atzori's last bout was a TKO loss to Brentin Mumford at Eternal 26 on July 8, his only fight since October last year.
The 35-year-old will have six weeks to prepare, but that won't be a disadvantage for the all-round fighter.
Atzori is meticulous in his preparation, but is known to live a lifestyle that reflects his fight weight.
Where other fighters may depend on cutting weight, Atzori maintains a strict diet and regular activity so he is ready at short notice.
