Grog and monster land artist in court

A PROFESSIONAL graffiti artist was fined for painting a cartoon monster on an Officeworks building in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court yesterday.

Stephen James Finnis, 35, pleaded guilty to unlawful graffiti and told the court he was concerned about the damage he had done to the reputation of his chosen profession by his actions.

The court heard Finnis painted the monster at 6am on April 27 after a long night of drinking.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Jeanette Grigoris said a witness saw Finnis painting the wall and scared him off, but only 20 minutes later Finnis returned to try and complete his artwork.

Duty solicitor Trinity McGarvie said Finnis had been employed on the Gold Coast as a professional graffiti artist, and his actions in Hervey Bay were the result of “falling off the wagon” after a lengthy rehabilitation for alcohol abuse.

Finnis was fined $300 for the graffiti.
