Grog sends educated man off the rails and into jail

A MAN whose life has "gone off the rails because of alcoholism" has been sentenced to three months jail.

Alan Rodney Briggs was a successful and educated man whose life had taken a tragic turn due to an alcohol addiction, defence lawyer Sarah Laikind told the Maryborough Magistrates Court.

He had accumulated an extensive criminal history in recent years because of alcohol-induced offending.

The court heard he was most recently arrested on Monday for being drunk and a public nuisance in Queens Park.

"(He) abused good Samaritans wanting to help him," Sergeant Michael Quirk said.

He said Briggs was in court last month for identical offences.

Magistrate John Smith sentenced him to three months jail with parole on September 15.

"You've told me you'd do something about your addiction to alcohol," he said.

"I know you're an intelligent person but you're not doing something constructive."
