A guide on how to outwit zombies during an apocalypse

HOW do you protect yourself from a zombie apocalypse?

It's a question we all ponder from time to time.

In fact, one of our caring United States online readers, Oraine Mathews, wrote to us with some tips he wanted to share with you.

He suggests using a shot gun.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has more useful tips on its website. While these should get you through a zombie apocalypse, they can also be handy for other natural disasters.

Have an emergency kit in your house.

This should contain: one gallon of water for each person per day; non-perishable food; medication; tools and supplies like utility knives, duct tape and a battery-powered radio; hygiene products like soap, towels and household bleach; important documents like copies of your drivers licence, passport and birth certificates; and first-aid supplies.

Implement an emergency plan:

Pick a meeting place to regroup in case zombies invade your house ... or if it becomes flooded.

Pick one place right outside the house for sudden emergencies and one place outside your neighbourhood in case you are unable to return home right away.

Identify emergency contacts. Make a list of local contacts like the police, fire department, and your local zombie response team. Also identify an out-of-state contact that you can call during an emergency to let the rest of your family know you are ok.

Plan your evacuation route. When zombies are hungry they won't stop until they get food (brains), which means you need to get out of town fast.

Plan where you would go and multiple routes you would take. This is also helpful when natural disasters strike and you have to take shelter fast.
