Guilty plea on death crash

A YOUNG drunk driver accused of causing the death of a Gin Gin father when he crashed into a tree has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

David Schafer, 24, appeared in custody for committal proceedings in the Maryborough Magistrates Court yesterday and entered a guilty plea to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while intoxicated, causing the death of Ross Del Carlo and grievous bodily harm to Sharon Ruth Scott.

Five people were in the car when it rolled over and crashed into a tree on the Bruce Highway 10 kilometres south of Torbanlea on November 17 last year.

Emergency crews were called to the crash about 7am.

Firefighters freed trapped passengers before paramedics took the injured people to hospital.

Gin Gin father Ross Del Carlo died at the scene.

A man, woman and a two-year-old child were taken to Hervey Bay Hospital with various head and bone injuries and another passenger was taken to Maryborough Hospital with a shoulder injury.

Schafer was committed for sentence in the Maryborough District Court.

He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until his sentence date.
