Gympie trumps Fraser Coast in new housing developments

THE scorecard is out - Gympie has come up trumps compared to Wide Bay in terms of new housing development.

While Hervey Bay scored a 1% growth in approvals for single detached dwellings in the past 12 months up until February, with Maryborough experiencing a -6% slump and Bundaberg a 4% gain, Gympie strode ahead with a 24% increase, according to the Housing Industry Association's latest report.

While predictions for a Fraser Coast housing market resurgence were made after the Bay experienced a 267% increase in multi-unit approvals, up from 12 units to 44, Win Project's managing director Glen Winney said a bigger job market was needed to attract more single detached dwelling buyers to the region.

"This goes to all levels of government, there has to be something new we need to be doing."

Mr Winney said Gympie did well because of its close proximity to the Sunshine Coast.

"Because the Sunshine Coast has become more expensive, people have been pushed to Gympie."
