Hairpin turn officially named Blinco's Bend after marshall
THE famous hairpin turn on the RACQ Technology Challenge Human Powered Vehicle circuit has been officially renamed in honour of a long-time race marshal.
Shaun Blinco has been a familiar face at the McDowell Car Park bend, on the corner of Lennox and Kent Sts, for the past six years.
The turn will now officially be known as Blinco's Bend.
"I started marshalling when my son started competing and have been doing it ever since," Shaun said.
"It's a lot of fun and I really enjoy it.
"The competition is fierce but very friendly and it's really pleasing to see kids from opposing schools working together and helping each other out if they need a hand.
"It's a really good learning experience and the students learn the value of teamwork and problem solving skills."
Shaun regularly spends the entire 24 hours manning Blinco's Blend during the HPV race and 2013 will be no different.
"My daughter is in Grade 12 and will be competing for the last time this year so hopefully she does well," he said.
"My job is to make sure all the marshals know what their roles are and try and make sure everything runs smoothly.
"We can always use more volunteers so if anyone wants to come and lend a hand for a few hours it would be most appreciated."
More than 120 teams from across Queensland will compete in the HPV event.
Other events at the 2013 RACQ Technology Challenge include the Ergon Solar Model Car and Boat Challenge, Robotics, Smilie Pushcarts and CO2 Dragsters.
