Hass oldest player since 1971 to play French Open quarters

GERMAN veteran Tommy Haas has become the oldest French Open quarter-finalist since 1971 after downing Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-1 6-1 6-3 in the fourth round.

Haas is also the first German to reach the quarters at Roland Garros since 1996.

At 35 years and 67 days, he is also the oldest Grand Slam quarter-finalist since Andre Agassi reached the last eight at the 2005 US Open aged 35 years and 135 days.

Haas will face top seed Novak Djokovic tonight for a place in the semi-finals after the Serb beat another German, Phillip Kohlschreiber, 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4.

The winner is almost certain to meet seven-time winner Rafael Nadal who celebrated his 27th birthday with a comprehensive 6-4 6-1 6-3 win against Kei Nishikori - the first Japanese man to reach the fourth round since 1938.

It was Nadal's 56th win from 57 matches at Roland Garros - he will take on No.9 seed Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarters tonight.

The disappointment continued for Sam Stosur after she and doubles partner Francesca Schiavone were beaten 6-4 7-5 in the third round by New Zealander Marina Erakovic and Zimbabwe's Cara Black.
