Swift’s sales through the roof

SHE'S barely uttered a word in public for 18 months, but Taylor Swift is still causing a ruckus on the charts.

On Wednesday, Nielsen Music announced that the singer's sixth album, Reputation - which is not yet available on streaming services - has sold over one million copies just four days after its debut. Experts think that number may even double by the end of the week.

To put that number in perspective, only five albums released in this decade have managed to break a million sales in one week: Adele's 25, Lady Gaga's Born This Way (2011) and Swift's own Speak Now (2010), Red (2012) and 1989 (2014). And last week's top seller was Sam Smith's The Thrill of it All, which clocked up 185,000 sales (outside of streaming).

So basically, when it comes to burning up the Billboard album charts, Taylor Swift is mainly in competition with herself.

Swift also appeared on last night's edition of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to play Reputation closer New Year's Day. The performance was unscheduled, and organised at the last moment as a tribute to Fallon's mother, Gloria, who passed away last week.

"We asked her [to perform] on a complete whim," tweeted the show's writer/producer Mike DiCenzo, "she said yes with zero hesitation".
