Let's have a civil talk about daylight saving

OPINION: I'm writing this column as I'm about to go on a week-long holiday - read on and you'll realise why.

There are few issues a newspaper can report on that really get people riled up and divided.

Paid parking, rates and whether or not rangers should hunt the Mary River croc are examples.

But there are two simple words that, when pieced together, really get the blood flowing in a Queenslander - daylight and saving.

Now, I'm from New South Wales, where people learn to accept other opinions and let intellectual debate rage.

But up here it seems the minute anyone mentions the words "daylight saving" you all run around like the world is ending. There's a better chance of Paul Gallen getting a statue at Lang Park than there is a XXXX-drinking Queenslander debating flicking the clock back an hour.

I get that farmers up north have enough sunlight already, but why can't I finish work and then go to the beach for a few hours?

Split the State in two - they did it 1859 when the Sunshine State split from NSW and it was probably the best thing since sliced bread.
